Henry Villard
New York Tribune

 “George
was there too?”
“Yeah.
He’s had enough, he said. George Smalley can’t bear the thought
of looking at another dead man. So, instead of firing me, they gave
me Smalley’s job.” The irony wasn’t wasted on either man. “He
can’t look at another corpse, so they hired me. I guess because I’m
a German I’m supposed to be immune to this shit.”
“How
did they talk you into it?”
“They
offered me a raise, and a three-man staff, and a title – but none of
that was the reason I took it.”
“Why
did you?”
“My
dispatch from Shiloh was lost in the mail, Sam, and my reputation was
lost along with it. I’ve got to catch up with the Army of the Potomac
and get it back.”
