About the Books Photos & Excerpts Appearances About the Author

Gen. Joe Hooker, USA

Hooker simply stood there for a time and stared at Burnside with a look of undisguised contempt. Finally, in a slightly calmer tone, he said, “They have a name for this at West Point. You remember it, don’t you Ambrose? It’s called ‘reinforcing failure,’ and it’s the greatest sin a commander can commit.”
Another tense moment passed. “You have your orders, General Hooker.”
Hooker shook his head sadly, patronizingly, just to restate his scorn, and, again without a salute, he stormed out of the room even angrier than when he came in.
